On this page the focus will lay on all the things I did up in Lapland. As there is lots of snow up here there are several options to enjoy the landscape. On the page before you could read about a 10 day hut-to-hut skiing trip, which takes a lot of preparation and courage to actual go. This page however is telling you rather about the activities that you can easily do within a day. From photography, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, a husky-sledge tour or cross-country skiing (again), I will cover everything that I can give you an opinion to from my own experience.
Photography
This is one of my favorite topics as it just requires yourself and a camera or even your phone. Nothing else, besides maybe some motivation and warm clothes, but you basically need that for everything here in the Arctic circle. Just make sure that you have thin gloves which you can wear while managing your equipment, as you might otherwise loose interest in photographing quite soon, or in the worst case even get frost bites.
You don‘t need much experience in photography to take great pictures up here and you can go out in every weather, as even fog and a light snow storm create wonderful and interesting pictures. Winter in Lapland is especially interesting when the sun is only up for a few hours, creating long-lasting sunrises and sunsets (for that you don‘t have to get up early or stay up late).
Photography is awesome, as full-time activity, but also as something that you can just enjoy on another activity. Just grab your camera and take a shot wherever and whenever you feel like. The best moments usually arise when you don‘t expect them. So many times I was already on the way back, ready for a hot shower, when I stumbled over a nice setting or some wildlife to photograph. So don‘t worry and just let the picture come to you!
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is fun and easy. This is an activity is definitely exhausting from the first minute, lifting each leg high up, just to get back into the deep fresh snow again. Snowshoeing on tracks is faster and less energy consuming, but also less fun! So whenever you can or allowed to please try and go into the fresh snow. Even though one says that you don‘t sink into the snow with the snowshoes, but that you rather stay on top, well that’s more or less a lie. You definitely do sink in, a lot! But to be fair, you don‘t sink it to the actual depth of snow, that you would sink in if you would go just with your shoes.
Snowmobiling
It‘s noisy and stinky. This is definitely not my favorite outdoor activities here in the cold season. There are some good parts about it though. For example you can go quickly to cool places, that would otherwise cost you lots of energy and sweat to go to. Also you can reach places that you can‘t reach just with car. Furthermore you can do cool things such as going fast or going into the deep snow (and getting stuck there), but anyway for me it‘s more the landscape and silence that I love here in Lapland and these you can‘t really enjoy when you are on a snowmobile.
Husky-tours
This probably depends a bit on where and for how long you go. There are several companies here in Lapland. I will talk about my (internship-) experience at Kota Husky, which is located at the beautiful Riisitunturi National Park. Due to Covid -19 there were not many customers, which gave me the chance to basically have private guided tours all the time. Which is a luxury! I loved it! Standing on the sledge and enjoying the dogs in front of me and the landscape around me was a beautiful experience. The best of all was a 20km tour (the longest for me) through the National park in the middle of December. The sunset lasted approximately as long as our tour through the heavily with snow covered trees. Also a huge bonus of these tours is that you can cuddle with lots of happy dogs!
